Who Were the Bereans?

As the Apostle Paul was planting churches in Asia Minor, God commissioned him with the "Macedonian Call"-- to bring the Gospel to the region of Macedonia. This was one of the most difficult phases of Paul's ministry. The first town he entered he and Silas were beaten and thrown in prison. In the next city a riot formed and they were chased out of town. Tragically, Macedonia was proving to be a place where the Scriptures were angrily rejected out of misguided loyalty to unbiblical traditions.

However, as they stumbled into the town of Berea, the Bible testifies, "Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the Word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so." (Acts 17:11) The Bereans took the teachings of Paul and Silas concerning Christ, compared it with the Scripture, and discovered that the Old Testament had been prophesying about Christ for hundreds of years. They became partakers of the fullness of Christ because of their grace-enabled commitment and humility before the Scriptures.

In the same way, Berean Community Church is committed to believing only what can be verified through the Scriptures. Our name serves as a reminder that we are accountable to Scripture alone. The Bible is the litmus test for life and experience. We do not claim to be as noble as the Bereans but they have indeed set a standard for every Christian of this age.

Our church was founded in 1983 by a group of believers eager to search the Scriptures. Starting in a storefront in Milford, we saw the Lord's provision of a location on Highway 14 that still houses us to this day. However, it is not the real estate but the people doing the work of the ministry that make up a church. We are grateful for the many saints who proclaim the truth and support each other in the Christian life.
